Neighbourhood

The historic building in the middle of Hamburg’s old town was built in 1888 by Arthur Viol as a residential and commercial building and is one of the oldest in the district. In the post-war period, a part of the building was extended towards the existing corner buildings. The original high roof with baroque gables and turrets was not rebuilt after the war.

Project

The entire building is under monumental protection. The scheme envisaged a hotel use with commercial space on the ground floor. The reconstruction included a section of the attic as well as the redesign and extension of the roof structure. The challenge was to preserve the cubature and formal language of the different parts of the building, while giving the ensemble a contemporary identity. This was achieved with a creative, progressive solution and led to securing the building rights in 2018.
